Black Shadow was the pilot of the Black Bull, and was the leader of the criminal organization Dark Million.

He was known as Captain Falcon (Andy Summer)'s nemesis, but was also a shapeshifter, having forged the identities of Don Genie and Deathborn so his schemes could progress.

Personality[]

As Dark Million's leader, he showed little to no mercy to those who disobeyed him. As punishment for Zoda's constant insolence and attempt to destroy both Black Shadow and Miss Killer by the power of a Reactor Might, Black Shadow shoved the Reactor Might into Zoda's stomach and watched him writhe in pain, later kicking him out onto the streets of Mute City.

Although he will acknowledge the loyalty of his subordinates, apparently rescuing Miss Killer at some point, he reminds her that she is no exception to punishment by his hand. As such, when Miss Killer's memories as Misaki Haruka resurfaced, Black Shadow pushed her into a pod and sent her out into space. And even after she had been freed, he captured her again and encased her in another pod where she was frozen, later seen being held against the Dark Matter Reactor.

History[]

F-Zero Farukon Densetsu (Anime)[]

Pre-2201[]

According to the Legend of Falcon, Black Shadow and Captain Falcon had been locked in a long battle over the universe. As Captain Falcon represented the side of light (or good), Black Shadow represented the side of darkness (or evil). Unable to defeat each other on their own, Captain Falcon apparently sought out the savior of the universe (Ryu Suzaku), while Black Shadow created his own tiebreaker (Zoda) to eliminate the savior.

Black Shadow created Zoda in a lab, and sent him to Ryu's time in the past to stop the 'Savior' from ever realizing his purpose. But it would seem to fail, which is why Ryu's girlfriend, Misaki Haruka was integrated into a backup plan. Making Zoda believe he was from the past and brainwashing Haruka were part of Black Shadow's grand plan to ensure that darkness would rule the universe. If Zoda couldn’t stop Ryu, ‘Miss Killer’ (the brainwashed Misaki Haruka) could, albeit she would rise in the year 2201.

2196[]

In the year 2196, 145 years after Zoda and Misaki Haruka were frozen at the East Bank in 2051, Black Shadow and Dark Million broke into a coldsleep facility called Alcatrand. They revived the frozen Zoda and modified him. While it is not known if they also retrieved Haruka, as she was not seen until 5 years after 2196 in the year 2201, it is likely that she was also revived or at least retrieved as well at some point.

Within the same year, Black Shadow had also overseen a Dark Million smuggling operation within a transport ship on the planet Heru. The transport ship exploded and it was alleged that Captain Falcon was responsible. However, this was actually Galaxy Police spy Roy Hughes' doing, as he set off a detonator to buy time for Falcon to escape, even while being subdued by Zoda.

2201[]

As Misaki Haruka was soon to rise as Miss Killer, Black Shadow had declared Zoda a failure and would send Miss Killer and The Skull forward for a plan to eliminate Ryu Suzaku. The Skull would inflict a curse on Ryu Suzaku, and Miss Killer would pose as a Dark Million defector named 'Sofia.' Once in Ryu's apartment, Miss Killer was supposed to get Ryu to say the name of his past beloved (Misaki Haruka) and then kill him, but a flash of the engagement ring in the moonlight had distracted her, this resulting in a mission failure. Black Shadow would later scold both The Skull and Miss Killer.

Around Christmas and during Lap 12 - Black Shadow Laughs, as Zoda took over the control room for Outer Space's Meteor Stream F-Zero race, Black Shadow appeared in the Black Bull. Because Zoda had tampered with the defense mechanism on the track to prevent meteorites from falling through, the Black Bull and its pilot were seemingly destroyed after taking the hit, following Black Shadow's apparent saving of Miss Killer and her machine. However, it turned out that this was a mere replica of the Black Bull piloted by a robot. The real Black Shadow appeared after the race, in his Dark Million throne room, beside Miss Killer. To 'thank' Zoda for his 'Christmas present,' Black Shadow would grant him with a 'present' of his own; tearing Zoda's tube from his head.

2202[]

Due to his powers, Black Shadow was able to take on other forms for other identities.

DonGenieLap42

Don Genie, seen in Lap 42.

As Don Genie, he was a successful and wealthy entrepreneur who had an interest in munitions. He had a palace, which was more of a fortress on the planet Cryton.

Lap42Deathborn

Deathborn in the shadows, from Lap 42.

As Deathborn, he was the host and representative of the F-Zero Committee. He almost fooled Ryu Suzaku into believing he was a spy for the Galaxy Police, just before Captain Falcon would point to the shadows, revealing who 'Deathborn' really was.

As Black Shadow's scheme was coming together, thanks to the creation of the Dark Matter Reactor on the Dark Star, it would all quickly come crumbling down. Ryu Suzaku and Captain Falcon's machines had overloaded the Dark Matter Reactor, leading to its destruction. But to ensure that Black Shadow would not be able to escape, Captain Falcon passed his title down to Ryu Suzaku and ejected himself from the Blue Falcon. Furious, Black Shadow lunged for Captain Falcon, but the latter would deliver a fierce and powerful Falcon Punch which would end up killing both of them.

F-Zero GP Legend (GBA game)[]

F-Zero GP Legend Manual
FZGPLBlackShadow US: Black Shadow is wanted by police all over the galaxy, yet often shows up to the extraterritorial F-ZERO circuits as if they were his own. It's inevitable that in any race he enters, there will be some kind of huge accident.
PAL: Despite — or maybe because of — his star billing on ‘Wanted’ posters throughout the Galaxy, Black Shadow brazenly swaggers through the F-ZERO circuits, knowing that they lie beyond the reach of the law. You can almost guarantee that any race he enters will be beset by accidents.

In the F-Zero GP Legend (GBA game), Black Shadow is a playable character with his machine, the Black Bull. He is also featured as a Story Mode character.

F-Zero GP Legend Story[]

Due to the game being released only 8 episodes into the anime's original JP airtime, and the game being loosely based on the anime, the Story Mode is not canon.

F-Zero Climax[]

Black Shadow (English Translation): The head of the evil Dark Million organization at odds with the Galaxy Police. The organization uses F-Zero prize money to expand their power. His evil knows no bounds. It seems he possesses a power that even Captain Falcon cannot easily overcome.

Trivia[]

  • The room with screens seen behind Deathborn in Lap 47 are possibly a reference to both the F-Zero GX 2002 E3 build footage and one of GX's finalized game trailers, where Deathborn's Mainverse counterpart is watching that verse's respective Captain Falcon.
  • In the Bart's F-Zero Classroom segment of Lap 20, an old photo is shown depicting a young Silver Neelson, Anthony Ropkin, and Mr. Zero, along with a seemingly previous Captain Falcon and an oddly-friendly Black Shadow. It is unknown if the Black Shadow featured in the photo is the same one leading Dark Million in 2200s, and no further information is offered when the picture is shown.
