Phoenix is the pilot of the Rainbow Phoenix. He is a time traveling space detective[1] and 29th Century representative[2] for the Time Patrol, accompanied by his partner QQQ.[1] Phoenix also speaks with an English accent in F-Zero GX.

History[]

Before F-Zero GX[]

When the Time Patrol heard that an event would occur during the GX Grand Prix would change the course of time and history, Phoenix was sent to the 26th Century with QQQ to investigate and prevent the event from happening.[1]

During this time, the F-Zero GX Grand Prix was occurring, so Phoenix entered with a machine he had obtained sometime and somewhere in the 29th century,[2] the Rainbow Phoenix. However, he picked up his race strategies from a famous 20th Century racer.[2]

Upon beating any Grand Prix on Master mode with the Rainbow Phoenix, it will unlock a special video for Phoenix, which also features his theme song.

After a display of his abilities never seen outside of the Master Pilot video (such as a tornado uppercut), "Phoenix ends up at an Action Hero Show," where he quickly gets into the spirit of it and strikes several poses for the crowd.

F-Zero AX[]

Instead of having to unlock him like in F-Zero GX, Phoenix is an available pilot from the start in F-Zero AX, along with 9 other AX pilots and the original 4 pilots who debuted in the SNES F-Zero game.

Alternatively Phoenix can be unlocked for F-Zero GX by selecting his Rainbow Phoenix on an F-Zero AX arcade machine by using your memory card that has F-Zero GX save data, this will immediately make the character available to purchase after you start up the game.

Trivia[]

  • Despite the Nintendo Power F-Zero GX Player's Guide stating that Phoenix designed and built the Rainbow Phoenix, the truth seen in the JP F-Zero GX Complete Guidebook and in-game CARDT data states that Phoenix did NOT design or build the machine. Phoenix truly only got the machine from somewhere in the 29th Century, as he also says the Rainbow Phoenix is the best of 29th Century technology.[2]
    • Phoenix, however, did actually design a machine for QQQ, constructed from a military satellite.[3]
  • Analyzing the mentions of the Space Time Police across Phoenix and Deathborn's JP and English GX pilot profiles actually proves the Space Time Police and the Time Patrol are the same thing because the JP word used for each instance is the same one. Determined by twitter user Lifescythe1 in this tweet.
    • Within the same tweet, it is also determined that it is highly likely that the history-changing event pertains to the chance of Deathborn obtaining the Ultimate Champion's Belt, but also that Deathborn is the criminal that the Time Patrol is chasing after.
  • If Phoenix wins, he reveals he can't actually accept the prize money as it goes against the Time Patrol credo.[2] Instead, he suggests that the prize money should be used for world peace.[2] And upon winning, he can't stay for too long as he says he has to chase a criminal to the 32nd Century.[2]
  • Upon being asked who the Time Patrol is chasing after "this time", Phoenix laments it was a criminal they almost arrested.[2]
  • He also reveals that the Time Patrol recruits from each century.[2] While it is not known how many representatives there can be for each century, Phoenix is one for the 29th Century.
  • He's also not allowed to reveal anything about the future unless it's vital to his duties, but he does say that F-Zero still exists in the 29th Century "in a slightly different form."[2]
  • Oddly, despite being partners, Phoenix and QQQ don't mention each other in their interviews.
  • Some people think Phoenix may be a descendant of Captain Falcon, due to similarities.
    • Both of them have bird-based names.
    • Someone could argue that Phoenix and Captain Falcon have a correlation to the element of fire, as a phoenix is a mythical bird associated with fire, and Captain Falcon has fire abilities in the Super Smash Bros series.
    • Though Phoenix had to pick up his race strategies from a 20th century racer, and Captain Falcon is a 26th century racer, there is a possibility that Falcon's descendants (if any, and if Phoenix was one of them) just simply did not follow the same career path especially over a course of 3 centuries.
    • Another argument could be made in favor of possible relation by comparing their appearances and attire.
  • Phoenix seems to be a reference to Sherlock Holmes, another fictional detective character.
    • Phoenix is a time traveling space detective.
    • Phoenix speaks in an English accent.
    • Even further cementing this main point is the fact that Phoenix's file name for his model and voice clips in the F-Zero GX data is "sherlock." And his theme is sharock_t.adx
  • Phoenix seems to have wind based abilities, as he strikes an uppercut in his pilot video which results in a whirlwind or tornado. This is never seen outside of his F-Zero GX Master Pilot video, however.
